CRITICAL CAPE COD HABITATS
Pitch Pine-Scrub Oak Barrens
Pitch
Pine is a salt tolerant tree species that is adaptable to
varying environmental conditions along the coast. Scrub Oak
trees are even more tolerant of the coastal salt spray. Most
of the existing stands today are from plantings that occurred
almost 200 years ago. They can withstand poor nutrient and
acidic soil conditions. Pine barrens are desirable for development
because of their flatness and fast draining sandy soils. They
also need fire management and development limits the amount
of prescribed fires.
