Orenda Announces 3.4 Acre Conservation Restriction Donation

Diamondback terrapinOrenda is pleased to announce the donation of a 3.4 acre Conservation Restriction in West Barnstable by Jeffries and Margaret Wyman. The property which consists of upland and salt marsh, is located next to the Town of Barnstable's Great Marshes and plays a vital role in the preservation of the northern diamondback terrapin. This medium sized salt marsh turtle, a Massachusetts threatened species, feeds and nests in the salt marsh and adjoining areas, and has been documented to nest on the Wyman property. With its salt marshes, coastal thicket and open field meadow, the property offers a variety of habitat for nesting, feeding and cover for a diversity of animals, in particular the terrapin.

Ralph Herbst, President of Orenda, said, "The Wymans' gift demonstrates the importance of preserving land on the Cape. Their generosity will help provide a protective corridor for the movement of the terrapin to the shores of the Great Marshes." Herbst noted that Orenda owned adjoining land whose habitat value will be enhanced by the preservation of the Wyman lot.

By placing a conservation restriction on the property and preventing future development, the Wymans will be protecting the diamondback terrapin for generations to come.
